Changes to Waste/Site licencing

05 March 2010

New regulations governing waste licencing come into effect on 6th April this year.

The list of exemptions and exempt activities has been expanded and some of the conditions have been changed.  Any exemption will last for 3 years only and must then be renewed.

Any current exemptions will still be valid when the new regulations come into force on 6th April but all exemption holders will have to move into the new system between 6th April 2010 and 1st October 2013.  There is a transitional timetable that states when exemption holders should apply for an exemtion permit.

The main thresholds are divided into two sections, treatment and storage.  Exceeding either of the limits will mean that there will be no exemption for the site. The main categories and limits are as follows:

Cans and foils - treatment 100mts outdoors, 500mts indoors; storage 500mts

Glass             - treatment 5,000mts; storage 5,000mts

Paper & board - treatment 500mts outdoors, 3,000mts indoors; storage 15,000mts

Plastics          - treatment 100mts outdoors, 3,000mts indoors; storage 500mts
